​Launched in July 2023, our self-guided Understanding Glazes course is Ceramic Materials Workshop’s newest online course option.  It’s an ideal format for students who want to learn about glaze chemistry, have a busy schedule, and want to work through the materials on their own time.

Upon enrollment, students have immediate access for four months to the on-demand recorded lectures and lab experiments along with lifetime access to the new digital glaze test book, Test, Test, Test!  7500 Glaze Tests by Ceramic Materials Workshop.  

“The Self-Guided learning option has been well received by the community…so many students have enrolled already and taken advantage of the flexibility”, says Matt (If you don’t know, Matt Katz is one of the founders of CMW and the main teacher in all of our courses).  “It’s been so popular that we plan to expand this option to our other courses in the future.”

Understanding Glazes is our most popular course, so it was a great choice to launch the new self-guided option with.  It’s geared towards all levels of students and requires no prior knowledge of glaze chemistry.  The on-demand lectures can be watched on any device with internet access, and there are downloadable pdf materials available.  The hands-on lab experiments give students a great opportunity to work with their materials and see how the chemistry works firsthand.  Although there aren’t live discussions available with this option, students can ask questions about the materials on the class discussion boards at any time.
