Building on the foundation laid in our Understanding Glazes course, Advancing Glazes takes your glaze knowledge to the next level.

It’s not just about throwing clay and applying a coat of color; it’s about going deeper to understand the science. Advancing Glazes is an intensive approach to the study and analysis of glazes. Students will research the nature of glaze effects, surfaces, and colors. The focus of the course is to provide students with technical and empirical knowledge about the composition, application and fired effects of ceramic glazes and ultimately, to aid them in making better-informed decisions as they strive to realize their vision. into the composition, application, and fired effects of ceramic glazes.

Advancing Glazes is taught by Matt Katz who is a leading authority on glaze and clay body education and research. With a unique blend of ceramic art and engineering expertise, he has a passion for making ceramic science accessible to all makers. Matt’s extensive teaching experience at renowned institutions like Alfred University and Rhode Island School of Design, combined with his co-founding of Ceramic Material Workshop, positions him as the ideal instructor for this course.

Course Options

We offer two 4 month, flexible online options to fit your schedule and learning style:

Full Course: With this most popular option, immerse yourself in the learning experience with live Q&A sessions with Matt and the other students, optional lab experiments, and on-demand lectures.
Lectures Only: Focus on building your glaze knowledge with comprehensive video on-demand lectures. Good for students that want just the lectures.

Advancing Glazes Prerequisite

We require all students to complete all of the lectures and lab experiments of Understanding Glazes before enrolling in Advancing Glazes. This requirement is in place to establish the foundation that is used extensively in Advancing Glazes class. The concepts in Understanding Glazes are paramount and are built upon in Advancing Glazes and are key in excelling in our Advancing Glazes class. Self-guided Understanding Glazes students will be asked to provide copies of their completed lab experiments.
